Can we actually drop MPLS, or is that vendor talk?

Many can, some shouldn’t — the honest answer depends on your applications. Real-time traffic between fixed sites still benefits from MPLS-grade determinism; most everything else rides well on diverse internet links with application-aware steering. Hybrid designs capture most of the savings without betting the payments system on a single carrier’s last mile.
How does SD-WAN handle India’s last-mile reliability problem?

By assuming it: dual underlays from different carriers on different physical paths, 4G/5G as tertiary, and per-packet link measurement that steers traffic away from degradation before users feel it. Failover preserves sessions, so a flapping link doesn’t drop calls. Carrier diversity engineering is where Indian WAN designs are won or lost.
Does SD-WAN replace our branch firewalls?

Increasingly, yes — platforms like Fortinet Secure SD-WAN put NGFW and overlay in one device, and pairing the WAN with SSE moves inspection to the cloud edge for internet traffic. Whether that fits depends on your compliance and inspection needs per site; we design the security architecture and the WAN together, not as separate projects.
What does the rollout look like for 50+ branches?
